Ways of making army movement and deployment quicker in local deployment games
In games with local deployments on big maps, a lot of the time is spent just moving armies the same way each round to get to the front lines. I have a few suggestions to make it a lot quicker. These suggestion should drastically cut down on the time spent on repetitive movements.
Suggestion 1: Deploy all armies in one click
Make it possible to deploy all armies in one click, by holding a modifier (alt, ctrl or shift).
Suggestion 2: Select bonus areas and target
This one is a little bit more involved. It's a way to move a lot of armies in few clicks. It would go like this.
- Select (somehow) all bonus areas whose armies you want to deploy and move.
- Click on a target territory.
- The game figures out where to place the armies in the bonus area, so that it is closest to the target.
- It also issues moves orders for all armies on route from the bonus areas to the target, along the shortest paths. In other words, for each bonus area, find the shortest path to the target, and issue move orders for all armies along the path, in the direction towards the target.
The reason for step 4 is that you probably have sent the same number of armies from the same bonus areas towards the same target every turn, so just automate it.
Also, in step 3, all the stray armies in the area (not newly placed) could also be ordered to move towards the target.
Step 1, selecting the bonus areas, could of course be done in a number of ways. For example, by holding down a modifier and clicking all the countries, then realeasing it and clickin the target afterwards. Or by clicking a button before selecting all the bonus areas and clicking it again before clicking the target.
Suggestion 3: An alternative to suggestion 2 for quick army movement
Just let the player make the important decisions on the front lines. When he has done so, he can click a button, to:
- Place unplaced armies on the same territory as last turn for every bonus area.
- For every territory that had a move order last turn, but not the current turn, send all armies there in the same direction as in the last turn.
Suggestion 4: Brush strokes
And here is another idea that would be nice. Let the player draw a line/curve, like a brush stroke, along several of his own territories, and all armies in those territories will move along the line/curve.
