Tell an AI to take your territory
(I will use the basic world map for illustration) You are playing with an AI, and you are in africa. The AI is trying to take S America, and an opponent moves a large amount of forces to Brazil. You have enough forces to stop the opponent, but the AI doesn't. You attack the opponent to save the AI and win. However, now you are left with Brazil, that the AI will never claim. It would be nice if you could tell the AI to take the territory, especially if the AI is struggling.
This is a good idea, but ultimately being able to control an AI defeats the purpose of having an AI.
If you can control where the AI attacks, pretty soon you’re going to want to be able to tell the AI where to deploy too. After all, telling the AI where to attack with its existing armies is a bit silly if it deploys somewhere else not near to where you told it to attack. Or perhaps you’re assuming the AI would automatically choose where to deploy based off of your attack orders.
It’s easy to look at places where you want the AI to take one territory and think, “It would be nice if I could tell the AI to take that territory!”
But if you let players control the AI, it becomes essential for players to plan out all of their teammate AI’s moves. After all, the AI is pretty dumb, and any orders players think up are going to be significantly better than the ones it would have come up with on its own. At this point, the only winning move is to plan out all of the AIs orders just as carefully as you would your own.
Ultimately, the AI would just become an extension of the player’s empire. This defeats the purpose of having an AI – you may have well just given each player more starting locations.
It may be a good idea to be able to give a generic order to your AIs, such as “Go offensive!” or “Go defensive!”. I wouldn’t be against this idea, but if you give too much control over AI teammates it increases the amount of work it takes to take a best-possible turn, which is something I generally want to avoid.
